How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Hello. I request permission for a librarian's reversal of the Category:Categories of Morocco by location. Because on December 27, 2021 I did it; and got blocked by edit war. I feel offended, and unfairly persecuted.

If your answer is negative; I promise not to bother you anymore, not to edit again and retire peacefully. Thank you. Allforrous (talk) 23:35, 21 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Allforrous: I'm not sure I understand your question. You tried to delete it because it was empty. Yann removed the speedy deletion template, but as far as I can see, didn't add any content. Maybe I've misunderstood? Anyway, I've added some content, so now it doesn't need to be deleted or to sit empty. Problem solved? -- Themightyquill (talk) 14:18, 31 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello. Thank you for your attention, I appreciate your kindness. Before blocking an editor, you have to meditate, think a little, keep in mind the good faith of others, which is one of our pillars. Thanks again. Receive my blessing. --Allforrous (talk) 15:50, 31 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Deletion of a photo[edit]

Hello, can you see if the photo which is requested to be deleted here should be deleted or not? Kiro Bassem (talk) 13:18, 25 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The HABS/LOC info is incorrect. You can see the address of 1405 on the door in this photo and if you look at Google Street View, the address for 1422 35th Street NW is a different house. Here's a WaPo article about the house listing the correct address, which is 1405 34th Street NW. Since you have the tools can you rename the files and category? Thank you. APK (talk) 08:47, 6 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@APK: Thanks for spotting this. I'd support renaming, but I don't have the tools for a mass renaming of the files. I'll move the category though. -- Themightyquill (talk) 11:49, 16 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello. Can you look for this Disambiguation page? If ok. I made interior cats too. Thank you in advance. - - Globetrotter19 (talk) 20:05, 24 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Globetrotter19: Good work. I've edited the English description for clarity, but also changed it from "disambiguation page" to "base category" to reflect the current situation. A disambiguation page shouldn't be in any categories and shouldn't contain any content, including subcategories, just links to appropriate categories. A base category can hold the two relevant subcategories, but might also hold any images which include both buildings or the surrounding area. If you want me to change it into a disambiguation page, I'd be happy to do so. -- Themightyquill (talk) 06:59, 27 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you! I did not know the concept of base categorization, so it was worth asking. Thank you for help again! - - Globetrotter19 (talk) 08:47, 27 May 2022 (UTC)-Reply[reply]

Need help[edit]

Hello

Four new pictures ([1], [2], [3] and [4]) were added to this category today, but it is a different ship (unknown IMO number for me) with the same name Barra. Can you create a correct category with the another ship Barra? Thanks --Atamari (talk) 14:15, 1 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Stunteltje: can you help with categories for ships? Thanks --Atamari (talk) 11:58, 3 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Atamari: What should the new category be called? -- Themightyquill (talk) 15:49, 3 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Category:Barra (ship, ????) I don't know the year of manufacture --Atamari (talk) 17:46, 3 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Maybe Broichmore could help? -- Themightyquill (talk) 19:28, 3 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
thank to user:Stunteltje to resolve (move to Category:Barra (ship, 1998, Tokyo)). --Atamari (talk) 19:47, 3 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Unfortunately I cannot find the right IMO number for Category:Barra (ship, 1998). It seems to be an old Dutch ferry.--Stunteltje (talk) 19:51, 3 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

[edit]

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,

Flat lists[edit]

Would you be so kind, as an innovator of flat lists on Commons, to comment on a relevant issue here: Commons:Categories for discussion/2022/06/Category:Streets in Moscow Oblast by name? Александр Мотин (talk) 18:17, 19 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Александр Мотин: I certainly favour creating flat list categories over redundant categorization (e.g. placing something in both Category:Streets in Moscow Oblast by name and Category:Streets in Moscow Oblast named after people‎) but that doesn't mean they are always a good idea. I certainly wouldn't want to see Category:Streets in Russsia by name (flat list) or Category:Streets by name (flat list). I don't have much to add to this discussion particular since I don't know much about Moscow Oblast or its streets, but I'll keep an eye on it. - Themightyquill (talk) 08:35, 22 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Naming[edit]

Can you please help correct it on all occasions as "by Vinayaraj" (ref your comment on my talk page)-Vinayaraj (talk) 14:53, 5 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Template:FoP-Belgium has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this template, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

São Paulo (state)[edit]

Hi, was there a consensus for how to differentiate between São Paulo city and state? Edits like [5], which you're doing systematically, seem surprising. Also pinging @DarwIn and Joalpe: who may know more. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 15:51, 8 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Mike Peel I believe the consensus was to use the same system as with all other cases in Commons, which is also the same in Wikipedia - disambiguate the state and place the city as the main term (which I think is what Themightyquill is doing). There was another proposal to disambiguate both and build a disambiguation in the main term, but that one apart from the enormous burden of work it brings, is completely impractical in the current broken state of disambiguations (anything categorized as that will not present the other options, and rather stuck the file into a limbo category where it may be lost for years, making disambigs as not only unhelpful but true traps). Darwin Ahoy! 19:29, 8 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@DarwIn: OK, that makes sense - particularly if it's standardising cross-wiki. But, perhaps because of the name confusion, some of the files being moved into (state) are actually in the city (like the example I linked to above), and the former name seems to now just be a redirect to the state category not a city-specific category? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 06:44, 10 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Mike Peel: There were many files in the wrong category, and indeed categories in the wrong category because not disambiguating with (city) or (state) is inherently ambiguous. You'll note that I renamed Category:Busts in São Paulo to Category:Busts in São Paulo (state) but Category:Busts in São Paulo was already a sub-category of Category:Sculptures in São Paulo (state) since 2019. -- Themightyquill (talk) 14:58, 13 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
For me this changes was a disservice.
Especially ones like this [6] [7] [8]...
They are no categories of state/national parks of the city of São Paulo, as it makes no sense to have.
Treating all categories, with different subjects, as the same, is uneducational.
-- Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 21:45, 22 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Rodrigo.Argenton: Leaving them as Category:National Parks in Sao Paulo or Category:State Parks in Sao Paolo doesn't show anyone that there are no national/state parks in the city, because no one knows if the category refers to the state or the city. This is especially true when you only added one parent category (Category:Protected areas of São Paulo) which also doesn't indicate state or city. I would argue my change is clearly educational. -- Themightyquill (talk) 07:57, 27 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Including Category:National parks of Brazil by state, as you did, already imply that is a state. As Protected areas of São Paulo has "Protected areas of Brazil by state"
Also, there is Infobox, that we did not included, that could provide this information. -- Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 01:02, 28 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi. I noticed you created a redirect for Category:Circuses to Category:Circus in 2017. Do you mind if I change it back since category names are supposed to be in plural form and it works better that way for subcategories anyway? Thanks. Adamant1 (talk) 01:52, 8 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Adamant1: I'm not necessarily opposed, but I see that the subcategories of Category:Circus are also in singular. Things like Category:Back-bend in circus‎ and Category:Animals in circus‎. That seems funny to me but maybe it's used as an uncountable noun within the industry? Or maybe it was just a grammatical error here at commons early on that spread? I have no idea. Good luck! -- Themightyquill (talk) 07:46, 27 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK, thanks. I'm not really sure what the deal with how the subcategories are named is, but I'll look into it more before I rename them. --Adamant1 (talk) 10:47, 27 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

When you return from your break[edit]

Would you be willing to close this Commons:Categories for discussion/2022/02/African American categories? Krok6kola (talk) 20:27, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Krok6kola: I don't understand. It looks as though I closed it in July 2022. What am I missing? -- Themightyquill (talk) 21:53, 9 August 2023 (UTC):Category:Reply[reply]
Because every time I go to Category:African American cemeteries, it says "This category is being discussed as part of a Categories for discussion process. As a result of this discussion, pages and files in this category may be recategorized (not deleted). etc." -- Krok6kola (talk) 13:23, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I removed the banner on all "African American" categories per the directions in COM:CfD and added a link to the discussion on the talk page of the categories in the CfD. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 14:16, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Krok6kola: Ah, sorry. My mistake. Thanks Cryptic-waveform. -- Themightyquill (talk) 19:31, 14 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Category discussion warning

Maps showing the history of countries by period has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Categories for discussion[edit]

Is there any way to request more comments or a closure? I started Commons:Categories for discussion/2023/03/Category:1962 Lotus Seven about seven months ago, but so far only I and the original creator have commented. The process is rather convoluted; I just tried closing one out but I am in no way certain that I met all the requirements or formatted anything correctly.
