Below are summaries of licenses often used on Wikimedia Commons, and how to comply with them.
- The license(s) of a work can be found on its file description page. This is an example for a file description page.
- If a work is published under a single license, all of the terms in that license must be followed. If a work is multi-licensed (that is, released under more than one license), re-users may choose which license's terms they wish to follow. Except for materials believed to be in the public domain, a link to the full text of the license(s) is included on the file description page. Some licenses also have a summary available.

Public domain
Obsah označený jako public domain (nebo místní ekvivalent, např. „může být použit pro jakýkoliv účel“) je materiál, který není chráněn autorským právem, buď proto, že původní autorská práva vypršela nebo proto, že materiál byl výslovně uvolněn do public domain svým tvůrcem/svými tvůrci.
Upozorňujeme, že nezcizitelná osobnostní práva a další restrikce mohou být v některých zemích aplikovány pro některá použití.
Často vydavatelé vezmou public domain dílo a znovu jej vydají pod svou licencí. Toto může být legální, ale nemá to vliv na public domain statut původního obrázku. Pokud označíte obrázek jeho původem (odkud jej máte a jaký je jeho původ) a jménem tvůrce, může nám to pomoci v případě pozdějšího sporu s vydavatelem.
Creative Commons
Mnohé z licencí Creative Commons nemají svobodnou licenci a nejsou na Wikimedia Commons povoleny. Následující jsou povoleny:
CC-BY
Při licenci Creative Commons Uveďte autora (CC-BY) mohou přebírající vytvářet volně odvozená díla a dílo kopírovat, distribuovat a zobrazovat i komerčně.
U díla musí být uvedeno/a jméno/a autorů a při přebírání díla nebo jeho distribuci musí být zmíněny licenční podmínky nebo odkaz na ně. Můžete si vybrat jestli upravené verze budou dostupné pod licencí CC-BY.

Při přebírání díla nebo jeho distribuci musí být uveden autor díla a musí být zmíněny licenční podmínky nebo odkaz na ně. Vaše verze musí zůstat dostupné pod licencí CC-BY-SA.

GNU licence
GNU Free Documentation License
Pro jednoduchou redistribuci, zahrňte verzi, kterou přebíráte a její kompletní historii, a zahrňte GFDL (dejte odkaz na stejné webové stránky nebo jej přetiskněte). Toto je jednoduché pro webové stránky nebo knihy, ale (v současnosti) obtížné pro letáky, časopisy nebo noviny.
Přebírající mohou volně vytvářet odvozená díla a dílo kopírovat, distribuovat a zobrazovat i komerčně. Pro vyhovění podmínkám (a) uvolněte vaši verzi pod licenci GFDL, (b) uveďte všechny autory nebo tvůrce obsahu (na titulní stránce uveďte alespoň pět nejdůležitějších autorů) a (c) přiložte kompletní kopii GFDL. V případě odvozených děl musíte také uvést kompletní historii.
Jak určit, kterých pět autorů má být považováno za nejdůležitější není právně definováno. Doporučujeme použít některou z mětod jako počet editací, počet slov, hodiny přispívání do obsahu nebo něco podobného.
Jakékoliv odvozené dílo musí zůstat v GFDL.
When using a photo placed under the GFDL license as part of a larger work, the larger work does not have to be released under GFDL for usage to be within the license terms. The Free Software Foundation, creators of the GFDL license, has been asked for clarification of how much of e.g. a book counts as the "larger work" in these terms; they responded that no synopsis can substitute for what the text of the license says, and if in doubt the reuser should seek a proper legal opinion. Now, the GFDL says "When the Document is included in an aggregate, this License does not apply to the other works in the aggregate which are not themselves derivative works of the Document." So, the larger work doesn't (always) have to be released under GFDL.

GNU GPL a LGPL
GNU General Public License (GPL) a Lesser General Public License (LGPL) jsou softwarové licence a nejsou obvykle používány pro text nebo média. Některý obsah na Commons (např. ikony nebo snímky obrazovek z počítačových programů) je pod licencemi GPL a LGPL.
Pro jednoduchou redistribuci takovéhoto materiálu včetně pozměněných verzí (a) uvolněte vaši verzi pod stejnou licencí a (b) uveďte zdrojovou verzi.
Upozorňujeme, že GNU General Public License (GPL) a GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) nejsou navzájem kompatibilní. To znamená, že obsah licencovaný pod GFDL stejně jako licencovaný pod GPL namůže být použit zároveň ve stejném díle, např. vložený kód GPL počítačového programu ve vysvětlujícím GFDL textu. Nicméně GPL obrázky v GFDL textu jsou považovány za agregaci dvou děl a ne jediné dílo.
