A WikiProject is a project to manage a specific topic or family of topics within a Wikimedia project. It is composed of a collection of pages and a group of editors who use those pages to collaborate on a specific task. It is not a place to create content directly, but a resource to help coordinate and organize the creation and maintenance of such content. A list of Commons' WikiProjects can be found at Category:Commons WikiProjects.
The discussion pages attached to a project page are a convenient forum for those interested in that project.
FAQ[edit]
- Q1: How can I join a WikiProject? Most WikiProjects should have a member list. Simply enter your name, and you're on! Ask a fellow member, or at its talkpage, for information on current tasks, or how you may be able to help.
- Q2: Can anyone join a WikiProject?Yes. Anyone interested on a particular project may freely join it. Although, if you will be inactive, you may want to consider temporarily removing yourself from the member list, just to avoid being contacted when you may not be able to respond.
- Q3: Shouldn't "WikiProjects" be projects of "Wikipedias", like the English Wikipedia, and not Commons? No. A WikiProject is a popular term used on most Wikimedia projects referring to a collaboration of editors at a wiki, and not any particular Wikipedia. Commons is also a wiki.
- Q4: How do I start a new project, or propose the closing of an old inactive project?Currently, no formal process exists for this on Commons. Commons:Village pump/Proposals is where we usually discuss things like this.
