Featured media candidates

Featured media candidates are files that the community will vote on, to determine whether or not they will be highlighted as some of the finest on Wikimedia Commons. This page lists the candidates to become featured media. The media of the day is selected from featured media.

Old candidates for Featured media are listed here. There are also chronological lists of featured media:

2023 and current month.

Formal things[edit]

Guidelines for nominators[edit]

All files are eligible except for static two-dimensional images, which should be nominated at Commons:Featured picture candidates. Please don't hesitate to nominate rare file types which may not have any fixed rules yet.
Rules for videos
The following characteristics should be considered for nominating video:
  • File format: Video is compressed using Theora or Webm, for digital videos is at least 1280x720 pixels or equivalent, for older videos is at least 640x480 pixels.
  • Stable image: Video is not excessively shaky and appears to have been shot using a tripod or other stabilizing device.
  • Composition and camera movement: The style of these videos are intended to be simple and clean. No quick zooms or handheld walk-throughs. Any movement within the frame (panning, tilting, or zooming) should be done slowly so that the viewer is able to focus on the detail of the images.
  • Visual clarity of subject: Main subject of the video, as well as specific shots, should be in focus and well lit (not over or underexposed). Compression quality should also be considered, with the video appearing to be clear and free of pixelated video that may be the result of choosing a low compression quality.
  • Highly illustrative: The video should have a focus and clearly represent a characteristic of the subject.
  • Free of distractions: Video does not contain noise or images that distract the viewer from the primary subject.
  • Color: Should not be over or under saturated.
  • Audio: If there is narration or relevant ambient noise, it should be at a consistent level throughout the duration of the video. Captions in the video's original language are recommended, but not required.
Rules for sounds
A sound selected as featured media is a recording of a musical performance, an environmental field recording, a voice recording, or similar that exemplifies our very best work. In addition to the requirements for all sound files, it has the following attributes.
  1. Public domain / free license. The recording and its subject are available in the public domain or under a free license. For recordings of music, remember that just because the underlying composition is out of copyright does not necessarily mean the recording is as well.
  2. Recording quality.
    • The recording is of a reasonable technical quality for the period when it was performed. For modern videos, a minimum resolution of 640 x 480 is suggested. For modern digital recordings of music, a minimum bitrate of 128 kbps is suggested because with a slower bit rate, naturally, less data is transferred. Thus, sound and image quality are reduced.
    • If applicable, the performance is of high quality. It is neither amateurish nor otherwise problematic unless the historical merit makes up for these. If the recording is of a natural subject, it should be a good representation of the topic.
    • The recording should be reasonably complete. For example, a recording of bird song should be long enough to give an idea of how it varies, and a recording of a piece of music shouldn't cut out suddenly half-way through a piece. Exception: A recording of a single movement or extract from a longer work is acceptable, so long as it can stand by itself, although the full work is still preferred.
  3. Caption. The description provided on the candidate page should be sufficient to clearly identify the subject of the recording, so that it may be used in the featured media portal for that purpose. For music, this generally means at least the title of the piece, the composer, and the performer. If opus numbers or other schemes are in use for this piece, please include them. Unfortunately, unlike featured pictures, we can't rely on thumbnails to identify the file. Any language may be used (some sort of method for switching between languages will be sorted out later).
  4. Sound description page. The page contains an extended description of the file, including (as far as is possible):
    • (i) a brief description of the subject;
    • (ii) the date and venue of the recording, where known;
    • (iii) Background information, such as the company which released it, or the person who arranged for it to be recorded, in sufficient detail to put the recording in context
    • (iv) where known, a list of any editing that has been applied to the excerpt that was not in the original, such as noise reduction or click removal. Be aware that in some countries a restoration can gain a new copyright.
    • (vi) for a musical performance, the name and years of the composer (and the arranger, where relevant), the year of composition (and the arrangement, where relevant), the name(s) of the performer(s) or, for an ensemble, the name of the group and, where relevant, the conductor and soloist (where information is unavailable, such as for some historical recordings, provide as much as is known).

Adding a new nomination[edit]

If you believe that you have found or created a media that could be considered valuable, with appropriate media description and licensing, then do the following.

Step 1: copy the file name into this box, after the text already present in the box, for example, Commons:Featured media candidates/File:filename.ogg. Then click on the "create new nomination" button.

All single files:

For renominations, simply add /2 after the filename. For example, Commons:Featured media candidates/File:Foo.webm/2

All set nomination pages should begin "Commons:Featured media candidates/Set/", e.g. "Commons:Featured media candidates/Set/My Nomination".

Step 2: Follow the instructions on the page that you are taken to, and save that page.

Step 3: manually insert a link to the created page at the top of Commons:Featured media candidates/candidate list: Click here, and add the following line to the TOP of the nominations list:

{{Commons:Featured media candidates/File:Your media filename.webm}}

Recommended: Please add a category from the list at Commons:Featured media.

Voting[edit]

Editors whose accounts have at least 10 days and 50 edits can vote. Everybody can vote for his/her own nominations. Anonymous (IP) votes are not allowed.

You may use the following templates:

  • {{Support}} ( Support),
  • {{Oppose}} ( Oppose),
  • {{Neutral}} ( Neutral),
  • {{Comment}} ( Comment),
  • {{Info}} ( Info),
  • {{Question}} ( Question),
  • {{Request}} ( Request).

You may indicate that the media has no chance of success with the template {{FMX|reason - ~~~~}}, where reason explains why the media is clearly unacceptable as an FM. The template can only be used when there are no support votes other than the one from the nominator.

A well-written review helps participants (creators, nominators and reviewers) improve their skills by providing insight into the strengths and weaknesses of a media. Explain your reasoning, especially when opposing a candidate (which has been carefully selected by the author/nominator). English is the most widely understood language on Commons, but any language may be used in your review. A helpful review will often reference one or more of the criteria listed above.

Unhelpful reasons for opposing include:

  • No reason
  • "I don't like it" and other empty assessments
  • "You can do better" and other criticisms of the author/nominator rather than the media

Remember also to put your signature (~~~~).

Above all, be polite[edit]

Please don't forget that the media you are judging is somebody's work. Avoid using phrases like "it looks terrible" and "I hate it". If you must oppose, please do so with consideration. Also remember that your command of English might not be the same as someone else's. Choose your words with care.

Happy judging… and remember... all rules can be broken.

Useful tools[edit]

1. Video2Commons, is a tool to upload videos from url/your computer to Wikimedia Commons, it automatically converts the video to a Commons compatible format. It includes functions such as removing audio, subtitles, video.

2. VideoCutTool, a video editing tool that aims to provide various different types of editing processes on videos that are currently in Wikimedia Commons.

  • Hello, I would like to nominate Disney's animated short film Steamboat Willie which has not been uploaded yet. The reason is that the film will famously enter the Public Domain on 1 January 2024 and I would like to showcase it on the Commons Main Page on that exact day (I would upload it on Commons on the evening of 31 December 2023). I know that this is unorthodox, but it would be a really cool way to celebrate Public Domain Day next year. What do you think? -- Gnom (talk) 17:56, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  •  Oppose feels too generic -- Alectricity (talk) 04:34, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Oppose At least the first 20 seconds are really not all that interesting. I'm sure it was a great IRL, but this kind of experience doesn't translate well to video. The final wave is kind of fun, though, so I might support a clip showing only that. --El Grafo (talk) 08:11, 11 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • @El Grafo: Thanks for the feedback. The final wave is what I was waiting for, so if this isn't successful I'll submit a shorter clip just of that - but I got the impression that longer was better here? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 09:57, 11 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
      Show what is interesting, not less and not more. A couple of seconds at the beginning to set the scene is a good idea, but who wants to wait 2/3 of a clip's length for something to happen? Unless you have some sort of narrative that builds up to a climax, of course, but that's not the case here.
      You're not alone, though. In my very personal opinion, a majority of the videos presented here are way too long for what is shown (or have too little content given their length). I think this may be a matter of mindset. People often seem to think along the lines of "I have this footage, what can I do with it?". For the viewer, it would usually be better to ask "I want to show XY, which parts of my footage are useful for that and how do I need to arrange them?" - then cut anything that does not serve a purpose. Part 2
Part 3
  •  Oppose Probably a very nice memory for those who participated, but for everyone else it's way too long and, more importantly, lacks a narrative. Part 1 is mostly just random parts of the boring announcements they have to make, partially cut mid-sentence, and with lots of "uuhm"s. Sorry for being blunt but who would voluntarily watch that until the end? The rest is mostly just random shots of people walking by - that's great B-roll, but not very interesting on its own.
I'd suggest to use the most important parts of the speeches (do you have more of that?) as the main focus and just drizzle in a couple of seconds of people marching, hugging etc. here and there. Possibly even keep the audio of the speech going and just splice in some of the video from the demonstration. -- El Grafo (talk) 08:29, 3 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  •  Comment One question, though: How is lassi unique to Dhaka? I drank it all over North India, and I've had it in the UK and the U.S. When you say it's a "unique heritage," does lassi originate in Dhaka? It was all over Delhi in 1977. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:56, 13 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    @Ikan Kekek Lassi is believed to originate from Punjab, India even 200 years before christ. Bangladesh was a part of the greater India before 1947 and thus lassi is familiar in Bangladesh also. In Bangladesh, we pronounce it "Lacchi" instead of "Lassi" and I heard some food lovers saying that the Lassi of Dhaka tastes different than that of Punjab or other parts of India. It was the British empire that spread lassi all around the world, that's why lassi can even be found in some western countries. Dhaka (basically old Dhaka) is preserving some of the culinary heritages till now, including lassi, bakarkhani and kacchi. The shop where this video was shot, is preparing Dhakai Lacchi in the same recipe for the last 100 years. Wasiul Bahar (talk) 18:33, 13 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  •  Strong oppose Extremely low quality video to begin with, technically not deserving. As well as it being exploitative to the child. She almost certainly doesn't know it will be going on this website, so one could question the right to even post this, much less bestowing it the featured media badge. Also, someone probably needs to rename this title, it's rather long and biased.-- Sea Cow (talk) 00:28, 22 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    @Sea Cow The depicted girl is my younger sister. She knows that I recorded this video to use it on the internet and she also knows that anyone can download it. I think that's more than enough to consider full consent of a child and her family, her guardians, including me, don't have any problem uploading this video to commons. Mong 30414 (talk) 19:35, 22 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    A full consent of a child means nothing, they don't have the testamentary capacity to determine consent at this age. She has no idea the implications of putting herself on the internet at this age. I don't really care if it's allowed in Wikimedia commons, we shouldn't bestow an award on a file if there's no consent for the usage. It's morally wrong. It doesn't matter if her family thinks it's ok, exploiting a child to make yourself feel proud about an FM is completely and utterly wrong. Sea Cow (talk) 20:10, 22 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    If a full consent of the girl means nothing, what is important to you?
    Should the little girl send mail to vrt that "look, my brother has uploaded this video of me where I am singing a song and I have full consent for this."?
    What about this image?
    People from community voted to made the image QI. Do you think that the photographer took consent from the child and the child have the capacity of knowing about commons?
    As far as I know, there is no guidelines in commons that media of a child can't be featured or quality. I don't think that very personal perspective of "morality" is a criteria for voting in featured media. Those "personal perspective of morality" varies from people to people.
    And I also don't think that featured media is a thing to be proud, at least not for me. I am not going to mention the media in my user page that "look I have a featured media and I am the author. Don't you think that I am a cool videographer?"
    Legal professionals says, parental consent is enough for photographs or videographs of children. Find out more here. This videography is completely fine from legal and ethical perspective and from the practices of commons also. If your oppose is depending on your personal opinion, that has nothing to do with legal, ethical or commons guidelines, I insist you to withdraw the oppose. Because, your personal opinion that's inconsistent with any established legal, ethical and commons guidelines, is never a criteria to judge a proposed fm. That's just your personal perspective.
    Most importantly, I nominated this media because of it's significance of content. Mong 30414 (talk) 15:44, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    Let's go over this:
    1. The QI you provided is of exponentially more technical value, this is way worse technically then the QI provided
    2. I don't find that to be as objectionably exploitative due to it not showcasing a video, or a talent of them. This is so much more public, and more visible of a subject.
    3. Your entire point about my vote not being valid because it's an opinion is the biggest BS I've seen in a while. What else is an FM vote then someone else giving their opinion if it deserves to have a a featured media badge bestowed on it. This entire process is functional because of people contributing their "personal opinion". Ethical guidelines say you shouldn't exploit a child, pretty simple. Again, it's a pretty common idea that children lack the testamentary capacity to determine consent and in this case, the parents determining the consent seems somewhat exploitative, and putting someone's skills of singing on the internet without their consent is pretty crappy to do.
    4. Don't tell me "I insist you to withdraw this oppose", you don't control how I vote, don't tell me what to do.
    5. You nominated this media because "of it's significance of content". I'd like to harp on my original point, technically, this is pretty not great, and I don't understand how the content is anything special. Anyone could sing this. The framing of the video isn't great, there's no stabilization. It's not a high quality video in the slightest, as well as the previously explained ethical and moral dilemmas.
    Sea Cow (talk) 18:04, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  •  Oppose Your sister is indeed cute, and I think all of the hue and cry about this being exploitative is dumb when she's your sister, but while she's cute, she is not at this stage an outstanding singer, so I think this is the video equivalent of a snapshot of your sister that is not of real educational value and would be likely to be deleted in COM:DR. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:02, 13 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  •  Comment I feel like I'm lacking some context here. In the first 3/4 we have a very dreary vibe going on with slow shots, washed-out colors and quite a bit of vignetting. That's accompanied by soundtrack that is ... well, it felt to me as if someone made this to either mourn a place that doesn't exist any more or to build up to reveal something horrible that happened there. Partially strong contrast to what was actually shown (such as happy cat content). In the last quarter, the music suddenly picked up for a bit, feeling somewhat triumphant or hopeful, bordering on epic. But nothing really changed in the visual department that would support that change of mood. Feels like director, video editor and sound editor were all trying to tell different stories. What is supposed to be going on here? --El Grafo (talk) 12:49, 9 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Oppose Whatever color correction was used, the artistic style of it is hurting my eyes. Also, the overreliance on drone work is deeply confusing. I just don't see what's so special. -- Sea Cow (talk) 13:59, 9 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Comment @El Grafo and @Sea Cow , thanks a lot for the comments. We tried to create a nostalgic vibe for the people who have already visited the place/the alumni of the college at the first part of the video (we know, this group of audience is very low in number), then, gradually, we tried to upscale it and tried to make it brighter and hopeful. We didn't consider the artistic part only, we tried to cover every aspect of the subject place in this video. We took 500-550 raw clips following a brief list of historically important areas of the college campus which took almost 2 months. Later we selected only 50-55 shots which can be now seen in the media. I know, single shot-single scene videos are safe in terms of featured media evaluation. On the other hand, media works with a large number of small and well-planned shots are more prone to mistakes, cause you'll have to put them all together and spend hours of editing. This video has 50-55 small shots, which means it is equivalent to 50-55 one-shot type videos, and the effort behind this can never be compared to the single-scene videos. The intention behind covering every possible aspect of the subject in a single media file is to make it more appropriate to use in other Wikimedia project entries on this topic. The subject campus is even related to the history of the independence of a country, we had to include those historical corners also in this media. And we had no other option but to use drones to take those shots which couldn't be done with handheld photography equipment, for example, the position of different academic buildings and playgrounds in the whole campus, the position of the campus in the city, taller buildings, and aerial view of the crowd. Please consider these facts also while evaluating this media file. The whole work took almost 8 months and this media work has been produced just to release on Wikimedia Commons. We produced this video with a lot of restrictions, no financial and technical support, no previous experience, no fancy equipment (the drones and cameras were lent by people), and not even a high-quality monitor to work on the color. That may be a reason behind the difference between expectation and the produced work. --Wasiul Bahar (talk) 19:15, 9 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    @Wasiul Bahar: Thanks for the response, I suspected something like that... First of all, let me say that I very much appreciated the fact that this is not a simple video of a single shot. Those are boring. Pulling this off is by orders of magnitude harder than most other user-created content we get to see here. I think if you consider alumni and other people with a strong connection to that place as your main audience, this a really good start. But as you say, that's only going to be a negligible fraction of the people here. With your explanations, I can now see what you were going for, but that isn't quite clear from the video itself. I'm by no means a videographer myself, but here are some ideas from an uninvolved mind that might get you closer to your intended result:
    1. Instead of "nostalgic" I got "dreary" vibes. Maybe tone down the vignetting a bit and try some more friendly looking color grading?
    2. When the music picks up, so should the visuals. That could mean a change in color grading (e.g. warmer, punchier colors). Could also mean a switch to less slow tracking, less wide angles, less drone shots, more movement, more people, more faces, more close-ups.
    3. Cut it down to about half the current length. Yes, I know: Ouch! Keep an "extended cut" for actual alumni, but let's face it: most other people won't have the patience to watch 5 minutes of footage about a college they never heard about before. Sorry.
    That being said: now that I've read a bit about it, I'm impressed by the whole NDEC project. Keep it up and be proud of your work! El Grafo (talk) 08:56, 10 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

    Well, let me balance that by actually  opposing rather than just commenting. El Grafo (talk) 11:21, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    @Towhidul Islam 21: , thanks a lot for your review and the vote. I assume, you voted from a good faith. You, of course, have the right to review and vote any of the fm candidates including this one. But the best-recommended practice is, since you are somehow or other connected to the subject being voted on, to review it in a more neutral style rather than just support it without any criteria being addressed, or just keeping yourself aside from direct support or oppose. This is to ensure that the organic voting process goes on its own way and doesn't get skewed to any particular guided direction. For the same reason, we, the people who are directly involved in this production is trying to be in distance from this review process. Please don't stop reviewing, you can ofc review the other fm, fi, qi or vi candidates. --Mrb Rafi (talk) 08:31, 13 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  •  Oppose There's a bunch of points. The first 1:30 minutes feel way too long, and the music in the background does not seem the fit the scenery. Adjustments to the camera angle feel robotic (gimbal?) and the videographers fingers are in the frame at least at 1:10. From 1:30 on, it seems like the camera exposed for the sky. Author and copyright information for the audio track is missing completely. And finally, it feels kind of pointless to watch a concert without the original audio. --El Grafo (talk) 09:44, 26 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  •  Oppose The lack of audio makes this not a FM in my opinion. Looking at a former MOTD,File:Pride Parade Brussels 2022 02 part 1 of 3.webm , which showcases a pride parade as well, I find that audio illustrates the video much more then just imagery. •  Oppose Like the idea, but 1) the camera is really struggling with the dynamic range of the scene. Highlights in the clouds are blown out while the actual subject is under-exposed. 2) The subjects aren't being tracked properly, in the 3rd quarter they're even running out of the frame. A higher altitude with a steeper camera angle probably could have helped with both of these problems. -- El Grafo (talk) 12:09, 18 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Closing a featured media promotion request[edit]

The bot[edit]

Note that the description below is for manual closure, this is mostly not needed anymore as there exists a bot (FeaturedMediaBot) that counts the votes and handles the process below. However after the bot has counted the votes a manual review step is used to make sure the count is correct before the bot again picks up the work.

Manual procedure[edit]

Any experienced user may close requests.

  1. In Commons:Featured media candidates/candidate list click on the title/link of the candidate media, then [edit].
    Add the result of the voting at the bottom (on a new line with a space first)
    {{FMC-results-reviewed|support=x|oppose=x|neutral=x|featured=("yes" or "no")|category=xxx (leave blank if "featured=no")|sig=~~~~}}
    (for example see Commons:Featured media candidates/File:Tverskaya Street in Moscow, Russia (May 1896).webm). See also {{FMC-results-reviewed}}.
  2. Also edit the title of the candidate media template and add after the media tag
    featured or not featured
    For example:
    === [[:File:example.ext]] ===
    becomes
    === [[:File:example.ext]], featured ===
  3. Save your edit.
  4. If it is featured:
    • Add the media to the list of the four most recently featured media of an appropriate category of Commons:Featured media, list as the first one and delete the last one, so that the number is four again.
    • Also add the media to an appropriate subpage of Commons:Featured media, list. Click on the most appropriate link beneath where you just added it as one of the four media.
    • Add the template {{FM_promoted|featured=1}} to the media description page.
      • If it was an alternative media, use the subpage/com-nom parameter: For example, if File:Foo.webm was promoted at Commons:Featured media candidates/File:Bar.webm, use {{FM_promoted|featured=1|com-nom=Bar.webm}}
      • If the media is already featured on another wikipedia, just ignore that and add the template.
      • Add the media to the current month's FM log of featured media, add {{Commons:Featured media candidates/File:example.ext}} to the bottom of the list.
    • Add == FM promotion ==
      {{FMpromotion|File:example.ext}} to the Talk Page of the nominator AND {{FMpromotedUploader|File:example.ext}} to the talk page of uploader.
  5. As the last step (whether the media is featured or not; including {{FMX}}ed, {{FMD}}ed and withdrawn nominations), open Commons:Featured media candidates/candidate list, click on [edit], and find the transclusion of the nomination you've just finished closing. It will be of the form:
    {{Commons:Featured media candidates/File:example.ext}}
    Copy it to the bottom of Commons:Featured media candidates/Log/November 2023), save that page, and remove it from the candidate list.

Archiving a withdrawn nomination[edit]

  1. In Commons:Featured media candidates/candidate list click on the title/link of the candidate media , then [edit].
    In the purpose that the FMCBot will not mark withdrawn nominations with a "to be reviewed" template and put them in Category:Featured media candidates awaiting closure review just like if they were on the usual list, put the following "no" template:
    {{FMC-results-reviewed|support=X|oppose=X|neutral=X|featured=no|category=|sig=--~~~~}}
  2. Also edit the title of the candidate media template and add after the media tag
    not featured
    For example:
    === [[:File:example.ext]] ===
    becomes
    === [[:File:example.ext]], not featured ===
  3. Save your edit.
  4. Open Commons:Featured media candidates/candidate list, click on [edit], and find the transclusion of the nomination. It will be of the form:
    {{Commons:Featured media candidates/File:example.ext}}
    Copy it to the bottom of Commons:Featured media candidates/Log/November 2023), save that page, and remove it from the candidate list.
